Book description

The Doctrine and Covenants are an interesting and different compilation of Mormon writings in that they are a compilation of new and continuously evolving revelations directly from Jesus Christ to Joseph Smith (except for the last few) rather than a translation of ancient gold plates such as the Book of Mormon some of the writings found in the Pearl of Great Price. The outset of the Doctrine and Covenants declares that the church, which a future revelation would rename to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, is the the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth. (D&C 1:30). Throughout the scripture of the LDS church the original Prophet Joseph Smith continuously labels all other Christians as either being false or some sort of non-living, or dead, perversion of the one true church. This sentiment is bolstered by the Book of Mormon declaration that if you arent a member of “the church of the Lamb of God,” which is obviously meant to be the Latter-Day Saints, then you are a member of “the church of the devil.” The Mormon Church also heavily emphasizes the need for baptism as a requisite for salvation yet does not accept the baptism of other churches (D & C 22). Joseph Smith clearly thought that everyone else had it wrong and so I wonder about why the modern day LDS church is striving so hard to be considered mainstream Christian. It really escapes me given the dismissal and condemnation of other churches that are given throughout the Mormon scripture. I set out to read the Doctrine and Covenants, the Book of Mormon and other LDS scripture in order to determine for myself if the Mormon religion could be considered Christian. Doctrine and Covenants provide ample argument; it was rather easy for any reader to reject the idea that Mormonism is Christian. Examples include and are definitely not limited to the following theological issues:The Mormon “gospel” is deeply rooted in salvation through works as opposed to a gospel of grace through faith and not of works, lest any of us should boast. All throughout the D & C are revelations from God chastising certain members by name for not being obedient and there is the constant threat of hell if the named individuals dont fall into line and start obeying (D & C 25:15, 42:60). At first it seems as if their gospel is pretty straight forward such as found in D&C 39:6 but then when you start factoring in the three levels of heaven taught in the D & C and all that needs to be done to achieve the highest level, the celestial kingdom, it becomes quite convoluted. The Mormon gospel is definitely a gospel of works which is contrary to the true Christian Gospel of grace that I believe is taught by the Bible. One of the requirements of salvation according to Mormon Doctrine is that of baptism. So much so that in the D & C you find the institution of baptism for the dead. In fact, it is said that while Jesus was in the grave he set up missionaries to spread the gospel to the dead so that they might have the opportunity to receive the gospel in the fullness of times and accept baptism by proxy (You might be thinking that the Bible teaches this doctrine and I’ll agree only that it does mention it only once to my knowledge. If you’d like more opinion on this I’d be glad to give it. I’ll only say that one must consider the context of the passage and also the choice of pronouns used throughout.). The D & C teaches that there are 3 levels of heaven that can be attained depending on how many of the T’s you cross and I’s you dot in your lifetime. The highest being the Celestial Kingdom where you have the opportunity to become like Heavenly Father, that is to become a God.The D & C teaches that Jesus and God (Heavenly Father) both have separate physical bodies. God the Father is as much a physical being as Jesus. This is supported by the Pearl of Great Price which teaches that God actually resides in the physical universe near a star named Kolob. Mormonism is definitely not Trinitarian in the sense that there is only one God, being as how Mormons have the ability to become gods themselves. The D & C teaches the doctrine of Eternal marriage. The interesting thing to me regarding this doctrine is that if you are not married for time and eternity then when you die you become an angel that then “gets” to be a servant to those that are worthy of far more, i.e. those that were eternally married. (132:15-17). Yay for the singles! (sarcasm font)One doctrine that I’m sure all Mormons would sooner forget established in the D & C by Joseph Smith is that of polygamy. The REALLY disturbing part about this doctrine is that when it was met with some resistance by his wife, Emma Smith, he received a “revelation” from God directed at Emma which said the following, “And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, receive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph [multiple wives], and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God. For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been faithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him. And I command mine handmaid, Emma Smith, to abide and cleave unto my servant Joseph, and to none else. But if she will not abide this commandment she shall be destroyed (emphasis added by me), saith the Lord; for I am the Lord thy God, and will destroy her if she abide not in my law.” In other words, even though Emma was opposed to the whole polygamy thing she was coerced to obey Joseph under penalty of destruction by God. And then conveniently enough, under much pressure from the government, the Mormons were forced to abandon the practice as revealed by a “new revelation” to the sitting President of the church at the time, Wilford Woodruff - about 50 years later. The Mormon scripture repeatedly claims that God is never changing and is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and yet the above mentioned polygamy problem is one example of when God gave a commandment to Joseph Smith that he later changed. Another example was the whole curse of God on Cain debacle which prevented anyone that wasn’t white to hold the priesthood in the church. Not until in the late 70’s, as indicated by Official Declaration 2, did God reverse that curse and all non-whites could now hold priesthood status. I only go through the pains of listings some of this stuff out because the Mormon Church is always pushing to be accepted as just another regular everyday Christian church. I think I have given enough examples to at least begin to show that the teachings of the Mormon Church are anything but that of typical Christianity as taught in the Bible. I give this a 1 star because the Goodreads definition of 1 star is didnt like it”. And I didn’t. The Mormon claim is that this book is divine revelation and I did not find it to be so. Rather, I found it to be the writings of a man who used the guise of revelation to manipulate his followers into doing what he wanted them to do. I would only recommend this book to those who are interested in learning more about Mormonism purely for academic reasons and not for those who are seeking to learn about the truth of God. For those seeking to learn about the truths of God I direct you only to the Bible.
